Ron King, at Circle Press, has an on-going series of bookworks, begun in 1995, that explore the possibilities of sawing a log of wood into book sections, or pages, which can be reassembled into their original log form. The first one is called “Hollow Log.” “Pages” cut from the circumference of a hollow log were divided into four codex bound books of equal size.

Next is “Termite Grid”, inspired by the wood worm track on the outside of a log. It has finely sawn pages codex-bound in linen with a grid of hole drilled right through the thickness of the book block.

The other day someone asked me if I could make a PDF version of my heart-shaped book instructions. Here they are, available on my website and in time for valentine’s day.

Susan Joy Share‘s work combines sewing, painting, crayons, sculpture and bookbinding. Below are 2 of her slink-y books. She also does “needle books.” Of these she says they “contain miscellaneous typed quotes and phrases, images, multi-colored handmade felt, and collected stitch work. The pages of these functional containers for pins and needles are machine sewn to an accordion folded fabric strip to form a codex.” One of those it at the end. Her website is here
