Maureen J. Hilliard: A Wrinkle on the Sole of Her Divine Foot, A Feminist Sacramentary
The title of my work is inspired by a Native American story which
announces the creation of woman from A Wrinkle of the Sole of the
Divine Foot. The myth explains why woman is so knowing: she is made
of the skin that feels everything! Thus women make meaning from all
her experiences from what she feels. A Feminist Sacramentary, a
collection of six books, celebrates a sampling of ritual celebration,
blessings and prayers which I have written and created over sixteen
years of walking with women along a path
of feminist spirituality. More personally, the collection expresses
a layer of my own spiritual herstory rising out of, and side by side
with, the patriarchal history and heritage of my Catholic tradition.
These artist books present the possibility for use as ritual guide
for those of us called to lead women in the communal expression of
their relationship with the sacred; they also allow for the
experience of the ritual by a woman in solitude, holding the book in
her hands and unfolding the book and its ritual in whatever intimate
way the pages might suggest. To this end, my hope is that this
sacramentary finds a home with the Sisters of Notre Dame in Carmel,
California, where the sisters and their guests seek a time of
spiritual renewal at the SND House of Prayer.
