Design binding - A Fowl Alphabet
Eleanore Ramsey, Sausalito, California
Bound in full French Cape Morocco. Unique. [A Fowl Alphabet, with 26 wood engravings by Alan James Robinson and calligraphy by Suzanne Moore, was published by Cheloniidae Press in 1986, with a deluxe edition of 50.] About the structure: The framed portrait of a loon is sculpted and cut through board covers to create the illusion of a loon swimming through the frame. Cut-out areas reveal an antique marbled paper appearing as a habitat behind the loon. When book is open, the marbled paper is seen to be the fly leaf. Loon is tooled with mosaics of Morocco, chagrin and box calf. The book is titled in palladium and is closed with a leather-covered magnetic clasp at foredge. Commissioned by Jane Pearce and Anne Howson. |
