Design binding - Scripta Naturae
Eleanore Ramsey, Sausalito, California
Bound in full French Cape Morocco, decorated papers by Claude Del Pierre. Unique. [Scripta Naturae, the etchings of Ladislav R. Hanka, was printed on handmade paper from Velke Losiny paper mill, in 1996 in an edition of 40.] Ramsey has worked privately as a binder and teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1980. She is a past president of the Hand Bookbinders of California. In 2004, she received the prestigious Oscar Lewis Award from The Book Club of California for outstanding contributions in the field of book arts. About the binding structure: It has airplane linen board attachment; hinged cutouts form display book in "easel-like" position; supports return flush into the book covers and are held in place with invisible magnetic closures; doublures of ultrasuede with decorative paper; and titled in gold. Eleanore Ramsey states: "As the book consists of a series of etchings, the self supporting structure permits the viewer a choice of "reading" the book in the usual manner or seeing the etchings displayed in an easel-like position. Parts of the book boards were cut out and hinged to allow them to open and hold the book in a standing position. Supports return to sit flush into the book covers, held in position by invisible magnets. The forms of the supports were chosen to suggest the organic nature of the text, and to complement the negative spaces of the roof shapes in the etchings." |
