Augusto Ferraluso, A Tragedia Brutal
(TipograÞa e Livraria Bahiana (Pelourinho) Suplemento de Modinha-Revista; undated)
24 pages of newsprint, containing three separate poems, side-stapled into wrappers, printed in two colors (blue and red) with a half-tone drawing of a hit-and-run car accident in Rio do Janeiro.
From the collection of Alastair Johnston.
Larger than the other folhetos I collected, this one contains three poems and was given away free as a supplement to a fashion magazine. The back cover lists other works from the same press: seven religious works by Manoel DAlmeida Filho, three strange tales by Rodolfo Coelho Cavalcante, eight works by Antonio Alves Da Silva, Þve by Augusto Ferraluso, and one by Valeriano Felix Dos Santos. In addition to Ferralusos work, the present volume contains an unsigned poem, Sacrifício de Mãe (The Mothers SacriÞce), and O Drama de um Filho Amaldiçeado (The Drama of the Cursed Son) by E. de Souza. The Brutal Tragedy takes place in Rio de Janeiro. A couple of newlyweds, Tania (18) and Armando (23), are enjoying carnival when she is struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. He cannot stand the pain and dies soon after. The Drama of the Cursed Son tells of a pair of farm laborers who have one son, José, a worthless drunk. After the father dies, José spends all the income on drink and beats his mother.
