Of Green Leaf, Bird and Flower is an exhibit at the Yale Center for British Art (on until Aug 10, 2014). The description says “This exhibition looks at the ways in which self-taught naturalists and artists recorded and observed the natural world around them from the sixteenth century to the present, examining the intersections of artistic and scientific interest.” There’s a catalogue available if you can’t get to the exhibition. And a review in the Wall Street Journal. Below is a one of the books on display, ‘Crow Landscape, Elsdon, Northumberland’ (2008) by Sarah Morpeth.
Leslie Pearson says her work is “an investigation into memory, identity, and the transformative value of communication.” Below are “Bottled Up Emotions” and what she classifies as an “experimental book” called “In Words Alone” (made with gut, tissue paper, wire and book pages). See all her work here.
I’ve been playing around with Hedi Kyle’s panel book construction recently. Valerie Carrigan made good use of it by exploiting both sides in her book Point of View, shown below. She says “This book, created in watercolor, can be viewed from both front and back, offering two distinct vantage points from the mountain top [Mount Greylock].” Instructions for making the book are here.
My miniature books about the seasons are in the Pacific Center for the Books Arts Member Show this summer. It opens on June 21, at the San Francisco Public Library (Main Branch) and closes September 6. If you’re in the area, I hope you get a chance to take a look; there are something like 115 participants. There’s a facebook page about the exhibit as well as a website
Ines Seidel used teabags and old hymnals to make a new hymn book. She says they make a bit of noise when you turn the pages. See more pictures here.
