I love paper and my studio is filled with sheets of all sorts — patterned, colored, textured, plain, and lots of different weights. And there’s a big drawer full of sample books. I’m always looking for new paper sources and experimenting with the paper I have.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve made a few paper weavings. I’ve been looking at what others have done on Flickr and somehow stumbled on Ehren Reed’s website. She says she “relies upon books, maps and other found materials as I blend together traditional craft, contemporary media and remnants of consumer culture.” That’s one of her pieces below. You can see more of her weavings with maps here. She also does altered books — using lots of sewing, threads, and more weaving.
Won Park is called the “money folder” for using a US one dollar bill as the paper for his origami shapes. Look here to see a lot more of his whimsical and intricate work.
Between the Folds is a documentary “exploring the science, art, creativity and ingenuity of many of the world’s best paper folders” that is going to be shown on the Independent Lens series on PBS this December.

Norma Toraya, aka Crankbunny, makes great pop-up cards and sells them in her Etsy shop. She also makes paper puppets, and has a how-to book available here. (In case you’re wondering about the name, she says “a Crankbunny is a large magical medicinal fish with rabbit ears… so technically it’s part rabbit”)
The Paper Place is having a contest to give away a sample pack of every Chiyogami paper they offer in their online store — an 8.5×11” sheet of all 637 patterns. Enter by putting a comment on their website.
Chiyogami paper folds very crisply and is really strong. I use it in my miniature folded haiku book and as part of my blizzard and crown book instruction kits.
